It's October, which means it's time for scary video games. What are some of your favourites? Do you have games you like to revisit every October?

I'm super into kawaii horror. The Yomawari games are real gems. But I also love others like Until Dawn, the classic Silent Hills, and original Dead Space.

I've never played the Yomawari games, but I've always heard good things about them! I'll definitely check them out since I'm always looking for new things to play.

Early 00's horror games were some of the first games I actually played to completion 😂 Not sure what that says about me, but I'm a huge fan of the Resident Evil series. My favorite entry isn't really scary though, I personally don't know anyone that was ever afraid playing RE0. But the Fatal Frame games were always great, and Haunting Ground/Demento still holds up - especially thematically.

I've been playing loads of Phasmophobia with friends and it's honestly so good. If you're interested at all in Fatal Frame and want to hunt ghosts, it scratches that itch perfectly. (It's still in early access though so there are loads of bugs.)

I've only ever heard good things about Fatal Frame but have never been lucky enough to play them.

The Yomawari games are pretty good.

I'd have to say it is Fatal Frame, as a whole, for me. I remember playing them in college with friends and making a Big Deal of going through the first two games together with my three closest friends at the time.

Also, taking about ten steps in Fatal Frame 2, stopping to check the map, taking another ten steps, stopping to check the map...

That's also why I have a lot of feelings of fondness for Fatal Frame! I ended up playing Fatal Frame 1-3 with my best friend at the time and it got me super interested in folklore based horror. It's how I ended up picking up Forbidden Siren 1 and 2 (and later Blood Curse/New Translation) and Kuon through tangential interest/genre/etc.

I can't shout loudly enough: FATAL FRAME.
The atmosphere is so good in that series. They're the only horror games I've played that truly make me anxious or fill me with dread while playing.
I'm really not a fan of a lot of the newer first-person horror games that came about with the advent of Steam. Y'know the ones where all you do is run away or walk around? I need some video gamey gameplay!

Also, REmake is probably my favorite RE game. I share a lot of the same sentiments with Kazuma :D

Fatal Frame is lovely. I think it's brilliant how the mechanics push you to have the scariest experience. Center the camera right on the ghost and wait until they're just about to get you: that's how you get the most damage
This year I'm working a lot though, so I probably won't have time to wander aimlessly through an FF. I'll probably do RE2make or maybe get RE3make on sale. It feels more pick up and play while still being spooky

Corpse Party Blood Covered will always have a special place in my heart. That game gave me nightmares about eyeballs.

But Resident Evil 2 remake has to be my favorite game in the genre. It's scary but also a lot of fun.

A bit late but I was playing Bioshock 1 in october so... Even though it's not horror HORROR it's made to be spooky. Dark enviroments, ugly and deformed enemies that scream a lot and even some jumpscares with enemies made to spawn right behind you as you turn. The game feels a bit dated compared to 2 since you can't gun and plasmid at the same time so that adds a bit to the desperation factor when you're in a tight spot and need to play really well not to get rekt.

Original BioShock is fantastic! I much prefer the psychological horror that creeps up on you than the in your face horror of DOOM.

It really is quite nice. Makes me walk around on the tip of my toes instead of running around full speed with a drill in hand. Although I love running around with drill in hand tbh... I'm also thinking about starting Dead Space soon.

Dead Space was a great game, as well. The first one, that is. Truly made me jump a few times and got the heart racing.

I just played through The Last of Us Part II from Monday through Friday and I guess that counts.

Honestly, no game has had at a a consistent feel of tension and threat since the first Resident Evil on PS1. Which incidentally was the game I bought along with my original PS back in 1996. To have TLoU2 be the final game I play on PS4 is a beautiful circle.
